Categories Game Online: Rules, Scoring and How to Play on Phones
The classic categories game (Stadt Land Fluss / Name City Animal): rules, the STOP mechanic, scoring — now played on phones at the same table.
A whole generation played this with a sheet of paper split into columns: Name, City, Animal, Plant, Object, Celebrity. Someone recites the alphabet in their head, a letter is picked, and the pens race. The digital version on Kafedeyim keeps the thrill and settles the arguments with a vote.
The classic rules
- A letter is drawn.
- Everyone fills every category with words starting with that letter.
- The first player to finish calls STOP — pens down.
- Answers are read out and scored.
How scoring works
The digital version scores automatically, exactly like the classic rules:
- Unique answer: 10 points — nobody else wrote it.
- Duplicate answer: 5 points — two people wrote the same thing, both get 5.
- Invalid answer: 0 points — empty, or doesn't start with the letter.
Is "Zebra-fish" an animal or a stretch? The classic game's biggest argument is solved with a vote: any player can challenge a suspicious answer, the table votes for 10 seconds, and a majority voids it.
The STOP mechanic
On phones, the STOP button only unlocks for a player whose sheet is completely filled. The moment they press it, everyone else gets a 5-second grace period — exactly that "wait, wait, one more word!" panic from the paper version.
Why phones beat paper
- No hunting for pens; everyone types on their own phone.
- Letters never repeat within a match.
- The score table updates itself — no more "you added that up wrong".
