How to Play Who's the Spy?: Rules, Scoring and Tactics

The rules, scoring system and winning tactics of Who's the Spy? — how to play it at a café on phones, with no sign-up, step by step.

In Who's the Spy? everyone is at the same location — except one. The spy doesn't know where and tries to deduce it from the questions; the table tries to corner the spy with those same questions. Tension in both directions.

How to play

  1. Roles show privately: the crew sees the location, the spy only learns they're the spy (4-12 players).
  2. While the clock runs, the table asks each other location questions: 'When were you last here?'
  3. When suspicion peaks, someone calls a vote; the table votes on the suspected spy.
  4. The spy can win instantly by correctly guessing the location before time runs out.

Scoring and winning

Two paths to victory: the table wins by voting out the actual spy; the spy wins by guessing the location or surviving a wrong lynching. The location list is public — the spy guesses from that same list.

Tactics that win the table

  • Sharpen questions on both edges: answers shouldn't leak the location but should sweat the spy.
  • As the spy, deflect: 'you first — what's your favourite part of this place?'
  • Early votes are the table's biggest blunder — let questions circle at least twice before hanging anyone.
