How to Play Herd Mentality: Rules, Scoring and Tactics

The rules, scoring system and winning tactics of Herd Mentality — how to play it at a café on phones, with no sign-up, step by step.

In Herd Mentality the goal isn't to be clever — it's to think like the MAJORITY: whatever the table would answer to 'best breakfast food?', write that. Stand alone and you inherit the pink cow 🐄.

How to play

  1. A question arrives; everyone writes a short answer within 30 seconds (3-12 players).
  2. Answers are normalized and grouped ('Tea', 'tea!', 'TEA' are one group).
  3. Everyone in the biggest group scores +1; a lone answer takes the pink cow.
  4. While holding the cow you can't score — the only escape is someone else standing alone.

Scoring and winning

After the rounds (5 or 8) the highest score wins; ties break AGAINST the cow holder. In a 'chaos round' where every answer is unique, nobody scores and the cow stays put.

Tactics that win the table

  • Ask the table, not yourself: not YOUR favourite pizza topping — the table's average one.
  • Write short and canonical: 'Istanbul', not 'beautiful old Istanbul' — variant spellings can split your group.
  • Holding the cow? Go loud: you can't score anyway, so talk the table into wrong answers. 😈

Who is it for?

Big, loud tables. The lowest learning curve and the highest laughs-per-minute in the catalogue.
