How to Play Secret Word: Rules, Scoring and Tactics

The rules, scoring system and winning tactics of Secret Word — how to play it at a café on phones, with no sign-up, step by step.

Secret Word is social deduction in word form: everyone receives a secret word — except one player, who gets a DIFFERENT one. Nobody knows who; the imposter may not even be sure themselves at first.

How to play

  1. Everyone sees their secret word privately; all but one share the same word (4-12 players).
  2. In turns, each player gives a ONE-word clue about their word.
  3. After the clue round the table debates and votes for the suspected imposter.
  4. The most-voted player is eliminated and the words are revealed.

Scoring and winning

Catch the imposter and the crew wins; survive the vote as the imposter and you win alone. Word pairs are always cousins (Tea/Coffee) — which is why even the imposter can believe they're crew for a while.

Tactics that win the table

  • Your clue should fit both words a little: 'hot' keeps you alive either way — but too-safe clues make the table suspicious.
  • As the imposter, echo the room: if your clue turn comes early, name the most generic property you can.
  • As crew, lay traps: give a clue that only fits YOUR word and watch who flinches.

Who is it for?

Deduction fans and word-game lovers. A shorter, role-light gateway into Werewolf.
