How to Play 2 Truths 1 Lie: Rules, Scoring and Tactics
The rules, scoring system and winning tactics of 2 Truths 1 Lie — how to play it at a café on phones, with no sign-up, step by step.
2 Truths 1 Lie is one of the oldest icebreakers alive: everyone writes two truths and one lie about themselves, and the table hunts the lie. On phones, statements are written secretly and shown in shuffled order.
How to play
- Everyone types three statements on their own phone and marks which is the lie (3-10 players).
- The game picks a storyteller in turn and shows their statements to everyone, shuffled.
- The others secretly guess which statement is the lie.
- Guesses lock, the lie is revealed, and the next storyteller is up.
Scoring and winning
Every guesser who spots the lie gets +1; every person you fooled scores a point for you as the storyteller. A good lie is worth more than a good guess. Once everyone has been the storyteller, the final scores appear.
Tactics that win the table
- The best lie is 90% true: take a real memory and bend one small detail.
- Write suspiciously interesting truths — while the table attacks those, your actual lie strolls past.
- Keep your writing style constant: a lie that's noticeably shorter or longer betrays you.
Who is it for?
