How to Play Word Bomb: the Hidden Fuse, 2 Lives and Survival Tactics
Word Bomb: say a word that fits the category, pass the bomb — nobody knows when the fuse runs out. Rules, lives and a survival guide.
Take the hot-potato dread of your childhood and bolt a word game onto it: Word Bomb is a bomb travelling around the table with a fuse nobody can see. The phone is only the bomb; the words, the objections and the laughter belong entirely to the table.
What the game is
A category appears on screen — "a fruit", "a TV character" — and the bomb lands in a random player's hands. While you hold it, you say a word that fits the category OUT LOUD and hit "Pass" immediately; the bomb moves to the next player around the table. The fuse is secret: at the start of each round the bomb is set to a random length between 25 and 50 seconds, and no screen ever shows it. When it blows, whoever is holding it loses a life.
Setup: the table is live in 30 seconds
One person creates a table, everyone scans the QR code and types a name. No app, no account. Plays with 3–12 people; categories come in the table's language and never repeat within a match.
The rules, step by step
- Everyone starts with 2 lives.
- A category appears and the bomb sets off from a random player.
- Your turn: say a fitting word, hit "Pass".
- BOOM! Whoever holds the bomb loses a life.
- New round: fresh category, fresh secret fuse; the bomb resumes with the player seated after the victim.
- Run out of lives and you're out; the last player standing wins.
One deliberate detail: the app never checks your words. The table is the referee — repeats, made-up words and category stretches get called out by the group. That's by design: the "is a tomato a fruit?" argument is the best part of the game.
Survival tactics
- Stockpile. The moment the category appears, line up two or three words in your head; when the bomb arrives you answer instead of thinking.
- Keep it short. "Apple" and "a tropical fruit native to the Amazon basin" both count; one costs half a second, the other three.
- Never sit on the bomb. The fuse can run out at 25 seconds — there is no "surely not yet". Say it, pass it, breathe.
- Feel the pressure, don't show it. A panicking player repeats a word, the table objects, seconds melt away. Your own nerves are more dangerous than the bomb.
The grand finale
Word Bomb is a great elimination game on its own, but its true home is the end of the night: in Party Mode points accumulate from game to game, and the penalty wheel waits for whoever sits last.
If you dare: set up a Word Bomb table and light the fuse — just don't let it blow up in your hands. 💣
