How to Play Who Wrote It?: Rules, Scoring and the Art of Fooling

The rules of Who Wrote It?: everyone secretly answers the same prompt, the table guesses the author. Timers, points and bluffing tactics.

The moment you learn that the quietest person at the table wrote the filthiest answer — that's what Who Wrote It? is built for. Everyone secretly answers the same absurd prompt, the answers come back in shuffled order, and the table tries to pin an author on each one. The best part: making people guess wrong earns you points too, so fooling the table is officially rewarded.

Setup: 30 seconds, zero apps

One person creates a table on the home page, a QR code appears, everyone else scans it and types a name. No accounts, no downloads — everyone plays on their own phone. The game runs with 3 to 10 players; short mode is 3 rounds, long mode is 5.

How a round works

  1. Write (75 seconds): the same prompt lands on every screen and you type your answer in secret. Answers are capped at 100 characters, so short and punchy wins. You can rewrite yours as often as you like until the clock runs out.
  2. Guess (35 seconds per answer): the answers are shuffled and shown one at a time. For each one, everyone except its author locks in a guess at who wrote it. The author sits that vote out — all they can do is keep a straight face.
  3. Reveal: the author is unmasked and everyone sees who suspected whom. This is where the "I KNEW it!" shouting comes from.
  4. After the last answer comes a scoreboard; when the rounds run out, the highest score wins.

Scoring

  • Correct guess: +2 points.
  • The author earns +1 point for every player they fooled. At a table of five, misleading four people beats a single correct guess — sharpen that pen.

Bluffing tactics

  • Don't write like yourself. Your catchphrases and trademark jokes will out you on the very first answer.
  • Borrow someone else's voice. Pick words a friend across the table would use — the votes flow to them, the points flow to you.
  • Beware the "funniest answer" trap. Anything too brilliant gets pinned on the table's resident comedian; your goal is wrong guesses, not applause.
  • Stone face at the reveal. If you grin the moment your answer appears, 35 seconds is more than the table needs.

Table ready?

Start Who Wrote It?, show the QR, and let the prompts fly. And when the game ends, don't break up the table: party mode carries the same room code into the next game, points stack all night, and a champion gets crowned. The pen is yours. ✍️
