How to Play Taboo Online: Teams, the TABOO! Buzzer and Scoring

Taboo without the box: a 125-card deck on your phones, 60-second rounds and a TABOO! buzzer in the rival team's hands. Rules, scoring, tactics.

Everyone owns a Taboo box; nobody ever has it with them. Kafedeyim's Taboo moves the box, the hourglass and the deck onto the phones already at the table: a 125-card English deck lives on the server, the game keeps time, and the TABOO! buzzer sits in the rival team's hands.

What the game is

Two teams take turns. The narrator's phone shows a secret word plus 5 forbidden words; the job is to describe the word to your teammates without uttering any of the five. Teammates shout guesses out loud across the table — their screens show nothing, they guess blind. Here's the spark: the very same card is open on EVERY opposing player's phone. The instant a forbidden word slips out, any opponent slams TABOO!.

Setup: no box, just a QR code

One person creates a table, a QR code appears, everyone scans it and types a name. No app, no account. Taboo plays with 4–12 people; you can pick teams in the lobby, or let the game deal everyone out evenly — always at least 2 per team.

The rules, step by step

  1. A round starts; the narrator gets 60 seconds.
  2. Team guesses it: the narrator confirms, +1 point, next card instantly.
  3. A forbidden word slips out: an opponent hits TABOO!, -1 point, card gone.
  4. Card too hard? Pass — up to 3 passes per round, no points lost.
  5. When time runs out, a short summary shows and the other team takes over.

In the short game each team narrates 2 rounds, in the long game 4, with the narrator rotating within the team. A tied score triggers sudden death: one extra round per team until someone leads.

Tactics for narrators

  • Come in from the opposite. If "hot" is forbidden, "not cold" isn't. The forbidden list always blocks the shortest path — the detour is your friend.
  • Category first, details second. "A kitchen thing… you use it every morning…" narrows faster than a head-on definition.
  • Don't burn passes early. Save at least one for the impossible card that always arrives in the final 15 seconds.
  • Don't panic. One forbidden word blurted in a rush wipes out two correct guesses: you take the -1 and lose the card.

On the opposing team you're not idle either: follow the card on your screen and listen hard — be the first finger on that buzzer.

Keep the score on the table

When Taboo ends, the table doesn't have to. In Party Mode the host picks the next game on the same room code, points accumulate all night, and the evening crowns a champion.

Teams ready? Set up a Taboo table, show the QR — and mind the forbidden words.
